Home >>---> FAQ's: Bow Buying and Trading

Hopefully this can help answer our most frequently asked questions about both buying and trading bows with RMSG.

Please note that we are happy to entertain trade offers. We are also happy to provide you with extra information or pictures for any bow on our list. But PLEASE limit this to serious inquiries only.

Buying a bow from RMSG:

  • ORDERING: If you see a bow you would like to purchase either give us a call or send us an Email with the ID#. We do add the shipping cost.
  • PAYING: The most common way we collect payments are through credit cards. We can handle this over the phone, or you can request an electronic invoice. An electronic invoice will be sent through an Email, which will provide a link that will guide you through the payment process using your credit card. Money orders are also accepted, personal checks are not. We will not ship a bow until the total payment amount has been received, meaning a money order deposited or a credit card approved.
  • SHIPPING: Shipping will be charged at our cost. We do not charge extra for the "handling" part. All bows are shipped USPS and will be insured. Shipping charges vary depending on the shape of the bow, whether or not it is a takedown, and what part of the country we are shipping to.

Trading bows with RMSG:

When proposing a trade with RMSG please include the following information right away:

  • Your bow's maker, weight, length, materials, and any other pertinent information regarding your bow (condition i.e. damages, scratches, etc.).
  • Please include what your proposed trade is. Which of our bows are you interested in, and what are you willing to trade for our bow?

We always consider trades. However, we do not frequently trade. Most of the bows in our inventory are consigned from the owner or bowyer, meaning we do not own most of these bows. Trading requires us to pay for the bow, so our cash flow at the time often determines whether or not we are in a position to trade. Also, please understand that we are a business, not a private collector. We are always up front about this and are not looking to take advantage of anyone. Customer satisfaction is truly our main goal.

We look at certain criteria when we consider a trade. To help you out, this is a general idea of the criteria that we look at:

  • Is the bow marketable within a reasonable period of time?
  • All bows eventually sell, but draw weight has a huge effect on a bows sell-ability. Bows in the 48-53 lb range sell the best in our shop. If your bow is outside of that range, and ours is inside of that range, the chances of a trade happening decrease. If however, your bow is inside that range, and ours is outside, the chances of a trade happening will increase.
  • We look at profitability. Since we are a business, trading bows of equal value straight across won't keep our doors open.
  • Trades are best for our customers when we have a bow that fits their current needs and their cash situation is poor. If they have a bow that we feel fits our other customers needs, we can trade and secure that bow before it sells to someone else.
  • If time allows, it is typically in our customers best interest to consign a bow to Rocky Mountain Specialty Gear to get maximum return. We are able to obtain market value for a bow because our in store customers get to physically inspect the bow, shoot the bow, etc. If a bow is sold by mail order, we have a one week guarantee. If the customer does not like the bow for any reason, he/she can return it within one week for a refund of the price of the bow. The only risk to our mail order customers is the cost of shipping. We will not mail order a bow that we feel will not meet the needs of our customer. For this reason, there are some bows that we will only sell through the shop. This is the most fair way we can think of to sell a bow by mail. And, of course many of our customers consign a bow at less than market value to obtain a faster sale.
  • Sales prices are fair at Rock Mountain Specialty Gear because of our retail presence and because of our return option. Bows sold on other want ad venues can be risky to bow purchasers, and most buyers hedge their bets. Therefore, sales prices are most times lower than what we can obtain here in store.
